We Salute Our Veterans
In commemoration of Veterans Day, the attorneys at Klenda Austerman sincerely thank all of our veterans who preserve our country’s freedom, including our own, Val Wachtel who served in Vietnam.
Veterans Day originated as Armistice Day on November 11, 1919 – the first anniversary of World War I. Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day honors all American veterans – living or deceased – for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good during war and peacetime.
The military men and women who serve and protect the U.S. come from all walks of life; they are parents, children, grandparents, friends, neighbors and coworkers, and are an important part of their communities.
Here are some facts about the veteran population of the United States:
• From 1775-1991, 42 million Americans have served our country during wartime.
• 16.1 million living veterans served during at least one war.
• 5.2 million living veterans served in peacetime.
• 47% of living veterans are 65 or older.
• 2 million veterans are women.
• 4.7 million servicemembers served during World War I.
• Of the 16 million Americans who served during World War II, about 496,777 are still alive.
• 5.7 million servicemembers served during the Korean War.
• 8.8 million servicemembers served during the Vietnam War.
• 2.3 million servicemembers served during Desert Shield/Desert Storm.
