John Gilliam is an attorney and member with Klenda Austerman Law Firm in Wichita. The first 20 years of his law practice were dedicated to litigating high profile domestic law case involving individuals, estates and family businesses in excess of $1m gave him valuable insight on business operations. Gilliam used that experience to transition his practice to business.
Years spent dissolving businesses in litigation gives John a unique perspective in business entity formation. Clients who rely on John to represent them, whether they are small business owners, medical practices, public companies or family partnerships, value his broad experience in business operations, his practical approach to negotiations, his knowledge of complex business disputes and, most of all, his commitment to understanding and focusing on the client’s goals.
John starts by listening to his clients about how litigation relates to the overall goals of the business. He takes a holistic approach, considering the long-term impact to his clients’ business. As a business lawyer, Gilliam works with clients to ensure that a business is set up in a manner that benefits it throughout its existence. John counsels public and private businesses on their corporate, partnership and other limited liability structure. He provides businesses with advice on day-to-day operating and transaction strategies, and negotiates public private partnerships (P3), service agreements and other transactions.
Like the title of his favorite book, John was “Born to Run”, completing marathons in NYC, Las Vegas and Wichita. John has competed in runs throughout the United States, enjoying the varied landscape with his running buddies. Evenings spent with his wife Cheryl, his three growth daughters and a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon rank among John’s favorite. If they are travelling, eating at the latest Michelin-star restaurant, picking grapes in wine country or exploring another country, it’s even more cherished.
